INTRODUCTION

Are you aged over 19? Do you have an interest in studying software engineering and electronics? If you want to go to university and study software engineering and/or electronics at degree level but don’t have the qualifications you need, this course will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge that are required for Higher Education.

This course is a level 3 course and is equivalent to three A-levels.

OVERVIEW

Software engineering and electronics involve developing advanced computer applications through various projects in computing programming, database and electronic systems.

This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of different fields of software engineering (object-orientated programming, MySQL, SQL database applications and website development) and electronic theory (electricity, magnetism and electronics).

The course intends to develop abstract and logical thinking through various mathematical applications such as algebra, matrices, vectors, complex numbers, logarithm, all applied in electronic circuit and electromagnetism, in conjunction with advanced computer applications as Java programming language and MySQL databases.

In addition to this, you will develop the skills that are required for success in higher education. You will also receive advice and guidance while completing your UCAS application to study at university.

The course is taught in a variety of ways, including practical sessions, assignments and group work. You will be continually assessed throughout the year.

CAREER PROGRESSION

The majority of students that successfully complete the course will progress on to a university degree programme, with a focus on software engineering and electronics or a related field.

Other options include progression to a HND or Foundation Degree.

The main focus of Access programmes is to prepare learners for study at university. However, some may decide to go into employment. On completion of your course, you will receive a profile of credits that will reflect your suitability for your chosen HND or degree programme.

Entry requirements

You must be at least 19 years old at the beginning of the course and hold a minimum of level 2 qualifications in both English and Mathematics.

However, if you have already achieved a level 2 qualification in one of these subjects, you will have the option to gain a level 2 qualification in GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths where applicable.
